Yes, as stated in Turner's book ,the 2nd 8 is always repunched, some with not a lot of offset. Yours, with a partial bead-punch inside the 2nd 8 is not normal and is fairly scarce. But you can have 1, 2, or all 3 8's repunched. It's a neat year to find varieties, especially with nice offsets.

I think the OP's coin IS a 2/1a. By looking at the underpunch you can tell whether it was a pointed or rounded neck tip (truncation). It may even be a 2/1/1a, since about half the coins without the Obv 2 overpunch were 1a/1's. There were 2 dies with the Canada A's, only one of which had the denticle...

Brass will have a slightly "yellowish" appearance. If you are familiar with Canadian large cents, they are bronze, which is 95% copper 4 % tin and 1% zince. Yes, it's a 2/1, but I've loaned my book to someone temporarily, so I can't tell you what die specifically. Yours DOES have the doubled denticles from Vicky to Canada and both R/P'd A's in Canada, but I see no R/P'd N's, A's or D's anywhere else. Even though it's maybe an F-12 coin, it's a keeper!

The cost to certify would be well more than the coin(s) would ever be worth. Just keep them safe and you already know what they are.

Yep, the dies were getting tired during the '88 strikings. It's nice to have all 3 8's repunched. There are i, 2, 3 repunched and sometimes the 1. Lots of '88 varieties.

Must be chrome-plated dies chipping off.
