Re: Two Different 3's used on 1932 5 cents?

Oh, now I see something different in the curvature of the arc on the top left of the 3.

I see no difference. Your vertical lines are not identically placed.

Re: 1859 cent

I didn't say anything about "brass corrosion" .. I said that cleaning agents oxidize the bronze and give it a yellow tinge. I have seen 100's like this with yellowish hints .. all from cleaning. I have nearly 5,000 Vicky large cents and over 1000 of them are 1859's. I also helped write the...

Re: 1859 cent

No, it's not brass. It has been cleaned at some time in it's life ... maybe more than once. Any yellowish tinge that you see is to to any number of under-the-kitchen-counter cleaning agents that oxidize the bronze and turn it mildly yellow. A coin that old and that circulated would normally be cover...

Re: 1859 cent

Not much to say. It's the most common Canadian coin minted before 1916 and it may be less than "G-good" condition which is nearly right at the bottom of the grading chart. Keep it as an oddity or give it to a youngster. I use coins in better shape than that for golf-ball markers. The 1859 ...

Re: 1859 cent

From the photos, it's hard to tell.... blurry focus. Try to get the entire image of the Obverse and Reverse fully into the frame .. and strait perpendicular down. I can't be at and angle or tilt. It's well worn, so try to magnify the portion that you think sets it apart from a normal one.

Who called it a teardrop? It looks like a rust pit/chip in the die.

Re: 1893 large cent

For the '93's, look for dates with the digits close together and you can find 4 different repunched 9's and a couple R/P'd 3's. The last 2 digits were all handpunched into the working dies .. lots of spacing differences.

Re: 1884 - Obverse #2

Yes, there are 3-4 real doublings for 1884. You just have to look for them. Most are manual repunches of letters. I know of no hub doubling for the year. BTW, I co-wrote the Vicky Large Cent Variety section for the 2011 Charlton (the one with the Vicky varieties in the back. That is the last large p...

Re: 1884 - Obverse #2

No, an Obv 2 is identified by the crown tip impinging on the bead and the neck truncation where it comes to a point. If it is between the beads above and to the left of the C in Canada, it's a 2. An Obv 2 also has a dip or crease in the neck/throat. An Obv 1 will be fully rounded with no "dimpl...

Yes, they came from the final "wash" as they came down the line. You find many many George large cents from just before WW1 through the teens that are great "woody" keeps.

Re: When to grade a coin ?

My personal opinion (but I am not a 5 cent collector) is to gradually sell the nickels slowly, either on this site or Ebay, and raw in groups. I wouldn't certify any of them. I would certify the '47 dollar, but it will cost a bunch to have the variety listed... I'd try ICCS. For the '36 25 cents, I ...
