1870 50 Cents

Does anyone have credible information, with reference, detailing how many obverse and reverse 1870 dies were utilized or consumed? Perhaps someone knows of a researcher who has conducted a rudimentary study with images? I've identified 5 unique reverse dies based on die breaks, and position of '0' i...

Re: 1882 2/1 type 2 ?

Could be. I'll have another look at what I thought were 2 x 2/1s and the 1 x 2/1a in my collection. I designated them several years ago and would only have done so if I was fairly certain. The 2/1a could very well be a 2/1a/1. I never gave that option much thought, but it makes sense that could be a...

Re: 1882 2/1 type 2 ?

Yes concur. Most definitely 2/1. I have an identical coin depicting the denticle marker and slightly doubled second and third A in CANADA. Its not the rarer double die variety though, an example of which I also possess. I believe these are two different dies as the attributes of the second and third...

Re: high 9 and low 9 ?

These both appear low 9. A high 9 is fairly obvious, with the 9 vertical. The reason I bring the orientation of the 9 up is that on at least one reverse die utilized the 9 is tilted slightly CW, causing the bottom tip of 9 to be raised thus giving the elusion that the 9 is high. I've seen numerous '...

Re: 1882-H Canadian Cent

Bill, I was always under the impression that the different obverse varieties of 1881H and 1882H were due to different punches being used to sink the dies, thus creating hybrid dies, and these dies would eventually be used to mint the cents from blank planchets. At times, the legend letters of these ...

Re: New 1891 C3a LD

Well, I sent this to Rob about 4 weeks ago and haven't received a response yet. Which isn't surprising, he can take months to respond. I am happy someone else also discovered it, as it shows others are watching out - more eyes the better. From my perspective, it was a new discovery since I do not ha...

Re: 1859 large cent narrow 9 variety

Thanks for those additional images Piepala80. Die break at L11 is undisbutable. The break at L16 can be seen too. The one at L3 is tough to discern - perhaps it is faint. A very nice PC59-162 indeed. Hopefully you are able to forward images of this coin to Randy (especally an image of the break thro...

New 1891 C3a LD

For those interested. Recently while conducting research on Victorian Cents I came across this 1891 C3a LD (see attached PDF). For those that are familiar with Rob Turner's seminal work ' Dies and Diadems' , there is an 1891 Die Study included (Chapter 11). In this study, he found 32 (of 38 consumed...

Interesting my son is a Mech Eng student just finishing his 3rd year. Well, if we are going to start beating our chests .......... I'm an Engineering grad as well (UWO). I'm also an Air Force Officer nearing retirement and the aircrew position I occupied on the multi-role aircraft required extreme c...

Re: 1859 large cent narrow 9 variety

Thanks for enlightening me Bill. I have no doubt you have made significant contributions to the '1859 project', and for that many collectors are no doubt grateful. However, I'm skeptical by nature, and I'd still like to see additional images of this particular cent since IMHO I'm not convinced the d...

Re: 1859 large cent narrow 9 variety

Undoubtedly the Haxby site has not captured all the known marriages but Randy does periodically update the information when he receives new info from collectors. So far it looks like about 253 of at least an absolute minimum of 297 (reverse dies apparently actually used) marriages have been identifi...

Re: 1859 large cent narrow 9 variety

Hello. If I'm not mistaken, the die break appears to go through Leaf 10. When I consulted the Haxby Site, none of the reverses depicting a break through L10 match your image. This may be an unknown reverse or a later die state of a known reverse. Very interesting indeed. Are there any other die brea...

Re: Victorian Large Cent Mintages

Bill, I’m having some difficulty understanding why you harbour such concerns or skepticism. There are numerous examples in history where an apparent ‘truth’ has been eventually disproved. Based on observations, Copernicus was the first person to hypothesize in his work De revolutionibus orbium coele...
