Re: Universal Die Numbering System
The advantage of a universal system is it can be used for any denomination. I like Rob's system too, but it is tailored for the Victorian Large Cent. Attached is a sample of a rudimentary reverse die study I conducted on the 1871 10c which hopefully most will be able to open if they have the necessa...

Universal Die Numbering System
Bill, I'm not too disappointed at not being able to use the 'Turner system'. My system can be used for any denomination not just large cents. I initially used it when I was studying Victorian 50c minted in the 1870s. As you know, each die group has unique physical attributes common to all dies withi...

Re: 1895 thick 5
Thanks for the kind feedback. During the peak COVID lockdown period I decided to study my large cents. Rob Turner's book Dies and Diadems was inspirational in this regard. Unfortunately he was reluctant to allow other researchers to use his die numbering system to publish additional studies. So I ca...

Re: 1895 thick 5
I have one more thing to add. Based on your description of the obverse of the second (lower) coin in your original image I stand corrected and believe these two reverses are the same die. I lifted the left side of your lower image a wee bit and that tilted the 5 clockwise. Both 5s are now essentiall...

Re: 1895 thick 5
Based on your description you have this one too. The reverse die break may not be visible since the obverse die that was used on your coin was the first marriage. This reverse die also had two marriages. Divorce was rampant in 1895.

Re: 1895 thick 5
The reverse of your last image should depict the following die breaks. The date on this reverse die is the most aesthetically pleasing of all the 1895s - evenly spaced digits and reasonably level with one another, although some observers may consider the '5' a bit far. The die preparer took great ca...

Re: 1895 thick 5
Hello. I've studied these extensively. The position of the 5 can be quite varied. The '189' were identical for all dies used. Only the 5 was individually punched onto each die. Even though the 1895 Royal Mint Report states that 16 obverse and 5 reverse were consumed, analysis of over 200 examples by...

1870 50 Cents
Does anyone have credible information, with reference, detailing how many obverse and reverse 1870 dies were utilized or consumed? Perhaps someone knows of a researcher who has conducted a rudimentary study with images? I've identified 5 unique reverse dies based on die breaks, and position of '0' i...

Re: 1882 2/1 type 2 ?
Could be. I'll have another look at what I thought were 2 x 2/1s and the 1 x 2/1a in my collection. I designated them several years ago and would only have done so if I was fairly certain. The 2/1a could very well be a 2/1a/1. I never gave that option much thought, but it makes sense that could be a...

Re: 1882 2/1 type 2 ?
Yes concur. Most definitely 2/1. I have an identical coin depicting the denticle marker and slightly doubled second and third A in CANADA. Its not the rarer double die variety though, an example of which I also possess. I believe these are two different dies as the attributes of the second and third...

Re: high 9 and low 9 ?
These both appear low 9. A high 9 is fairly obvious, with the 9 vertical. The reason I bring the orientation of the 9 up is that on at least one reverse die utilized the 9 is tilted slightly CW, causing the bottom tip of 9 to be raised thus giving the elusion that the 9 is high. I've seen numerous '...

Re: 1882-H Canadian Cent
Bill, I was always under the impression that the different obverse varieties of 1881H and 1882H were due to different punches being used to sink the dies, thus creating hybrid dies, and these dies would eventually be used to mint the cents from blank planchets. At times, the legend letters of these ...
