Re: 1859

If you can get some real sharp photos of the obverse and reverse, I can probably tell you for sure which Haxby # this is. The closeup of the E in Regina is interesting. It's always possible that you've found something new, but there's just no way to tell from the photos we've got thus far. I can't e...

Re: 1859

Obverse 20 is a possibility. Compare your reverse with the ones in the catalog for Obverse 20.

Re: 1859

BR1859, please always provide full obverse and reverse photos when you need help with an attribution. We could search through all 253 die pairs, but it's a lot easier if we can look at the whole coin.

Re: Haxby help

I would agree with Gallant that this is a Reverse die E7b. ( I'm sure MG meant E7b and not E17b ) The match of the stem to leaf 9 is the best marker.

I love that coin! :) I know which one it is, but I'll let somebody else guess.

Re: Universal Die Numbering System

It may be hard to come up with any universal system that would satisfy the requirements of all the different catalogers of every denomination or even all the years of a single denomination. Every cataloger approaches their area of expertise a little differently, and even different years of a single ...

Re: 1895 thick 5

rjd65, Looks like you've done some nice work toward cataloging the 1895's! Someday I hope there will be catalogs available for all dates of Victorian large cents.

Are you working on any other years?

Nice closeup detail photo of a J11 reverse. Is the obverse 52 or 52a?

Re: 1859

Very nice one Gallant, and thanks for letting me know about this forum thread. Here is my low grade example which I just got this week. The die state on this one is between the other two. A fourth example is the discovery piece pictured in the Haxby catalog. The 5th one I have seen was sold on ebay ...

Re: 1859

The Haxby catalog lists 9 die pairs as R-10, but the article was written about 4 1/2 years ago. ( time flies ) Of those 9 die pairs, only 3 are still actually R-10. At least one other example has been reported for the other 6. The three that are still R-10 are Haxby #'s 53, 99, and 168. Since the ar...
