Re: 1882 2/1 type 2 ?
I think the OP's coin IS a 2/1a. By looking at the underpunch you can tell whether it was a pointed or rounded neck tip (truncation). It may even be a 2/1/1a, since about half the coins without the Obv 2 overpunch were 1a/1's. There were 2 dies with the Canada A's, only one of which had the denticle...

Re: newfoundland rutherford
Brass will have a slightly "yellowish" appearance. If you are familiar with Canadian large cents, they are bronze, which is 95% copper 4 % tin and 1% zince. Brass is normally 67-85 copper and 33-15 zinc. I'm not sure about any significant weight difference, but the atomic weights of copper and zinc ...

Re: 1882 2/1 type 2 ?
Yes, it's a 2/1, but I've loaned my book to someone temporarily, so I can't tell you what die specifically. Yours DOES have the doubled denticles from Vicky to Canada and both R/P'd A's in Canada, but I see no R/P'd N's, A's or D's anywhere else. Even though it's maybe an F-12 coin, it's a keeper!

The cost to certify would be well more than the coin(s) would ever be worth. Just keep them safe and you already know what they are.

Re: 1888 double 888 with possible obverse doubling and maybe die chips?
Yep, the dies were getting tired during the '88 strikings. It's nice to have all 3 8's repunched. There are i, 2, 3 repunched and sometimes the 1. Lots of '88 varieties.

Re: 3rd Sail Dime?
Please remove the above 2 posts in this thread by me, Bill in Burl,. I got mixed up and posted info on the third, or extra, sail on the toonie, not the dime. But I'm sure that the posted reason would be the same ... an error by the Mint.

Re: 3rd Sail Dime?
Yes, there was extensive discussion on a thread or two in the past on toonies and dimes. It just has the "name" third sail or "extra sail". It's just that the mint put their "cameo" treatment on a blank "air" section when it just should have gone on the sails. There were actually 3-4 small sections ...

I see just a tad bit of wear in the hair, plus the corrosion which will grow/deepen. As it is, ID say AU 50, maybe 50+, but details.

Try to find the 61st edition of Charlton that has the 50 cent varieties in the back .... Ebay and other places.
Or you can refer to the excellent work found here on the 50 cents:

Re: I think i might have found a gold mine
Were the prices in US or Canadian dollars? Scrap silver price for Canadian coinage is a little less than $20 Canadian so that would be for each face dollar with next to no wear. If you sold to a dealer, you would get $16-17 Cdn. If they were US coins, they would be worth more. If you paid Canadian $...
