I agree with the die polishing. They didn't clean it up well

Re: coinsandcanada.com price guide
Don't believe what you see in CaC. Check Ebay sold prices. Only use CaC as one of 3-4 references. They look like "dreamer" prices.

I'll say 25-30, but hard to tell from photos. Is there luster on the coin?

Re: 50 cent grading help
37 is XF+ & 46 is AU maybe, but you can't grade from a screen. Are the splotches on the holder or coin? with wear in hair

Re: More evidence of inept TPG - NGC
Well, then, he may very well GET the $200+ US for it if someone sees the scarce variety. It's in the 2011 Charlton on p 330. I sent the seller an email telling him his post was wrong, not including the very generous grade from a 2nd tier TPG (for Canadian Cents, since other foreign is sometimes good...

Re: More evidence of inept TPG - NGC
I've actually never seen a coin grade AU-53 and I've seen thousands. NGC is not noted for their grading prowess. I'd inspect the slab carefully and see if the coin itself has been changed. I think that the coin isn't much above XF-40. It's also marked wrong. It is a small leaves, small date Obv 3. A...

Re: 1859 1 cent is it brass ?
It's a normal bronze 1859 that has been cleaned and has some wear. There are any number of cleaning agents under the kitchen sink that make the bronze large cents more "yellow" in color. Actually a REAL brass 1859 isn't really yellow anyway. You've got a coin worth a couple bucks and was struck late...

Well, take a look at the CCF site and see how many P/L designations people are talking about.

I agree that it's incorrect and agree with you, but it will be hard to kill something that has been around for decades and decades.

Re: From 1981 onward - Uncirculated Sets
The way that I understand it, it was Charlton that started the term PL. It's been used for well over 50 years, so no matter how many articles come out explaining what the DID or DIDN'T do, the PL term will be used for decades more, correct or incorrect..

Just the "ring" when it's dropped on a table will tell you. More Ag, the higher the pitch.

Looks about right to me. How bad are the scratches that show when seen in-hand? I pay more attention to cheek and eyebrow that the crown and they look OK.

Re: Where to get Errors graded
Last I heard was that CCCS is still into errors and varieties. However, you should be sure that you are willing to pay the price for error/variety grading. Just the cost to grade them with that designation may be 3, 4, or10 times the cost that the coin will ever be worth.

Re: 1892 50 Cents
Well, by the ID photos in Charlton, the tilt of the crown and overlap with the forehead tell me it's an Obv 3. If you want it to be a 4, then fine; it's your coin.
