Re: New Canadian gold coins?

Just make sure that you pay as close to scrap that you can and know how to covert from grams and grains to % of troy ounces ... the RCM puts out some very small coins for a huge mark-up. I would suggest that you buy things on the secondary market rather than from the mint or post office.... you will...

Re: Found old cion

If you go down to the Token subforum on this site, you will see an explanation from me on another token series. Yours is much the same, but deals with Upper Canada rather than Montreal Tokens. Tokens in your series were made for 1850, 1852, and 1854. They are sometimes referred to as St Georges toke...

Re: Bank of Upper Canada

I would imagine that you are talking about the token with St George slaying the dragon on the Obverse. The Bank of Upper Canada was started in 1820 in York, Ont (Toronto). Many banks and merchants issued tokens through the first half of the 19th century, because there was no coinage for trade/goods ...

Re: 1898 one cent coin

All 1898 Large Cents have mintmarks .. it is a tiny one at the bottom of the reverse under the 6:00 leaf. Since this coin was contracted to Heaton (H) rather than the Royal Mint in London, it was unknown at the time whether it would have a mintmark (the Royal Mint's don't) once production began. Sin...

Re: Errors and Varieties

Varieties and Errors are 2 different things .. and the definition of a "variety" means different things to different people. Most Canadian variety collectors use the definition of a "variety" that Hans Zoell (the 1960's variety guru) used in his books on Major and Minor Varieties...

Re: 1915 1cent

The scratches/gouges on the Obverse are definitely post-mint ... maybe it was used to level a chair ot table. However the N in "ONE" on the reverse looks interesting on the left upright.

Re: Canadian Tokens?

These are Province of Canada, semi-regal tokens.... in this case, Front View Tokens. They were made in 1842, 44, & 45. There are a number of vareieties, depending on how tall the trees are to the side and whether the beaver has a long or short nose. There are very similar tokens with "City ...

Re: Advice on Selling Silver

My best advise is to look in the latest Canadian Coin News, where it lists the majority (but not all) of the shows throughout Canada in the "upcoming events" section of the paper. Only if the organizers send a notice of the event will it show up in CCN. I hope that this helps.

Re: Advice on Selling Silver

At most larger coin shows, you will get 85-88% of the scrap value of the silver, depending on condition.... maybe 90% if all are in good shape. Only NEW coins weigh what the book says, so heavily worn coins do not come close to the published weights. The buyer isn't really making much profit, becaus...

Re: Victoria Det Gratia 183?

It's not Canadian. It's Isle of Man and it's probably 1839 regular coinage. What is the diameter. If it's the size of a Canadian Large Cent, it's a halfpenny. If it's larger, it's a penny and, if smaller, a farthing.

They are just worth face value, unless they are MS-65 or better. Supply far outweighs demand, so there is no premium whatsoever.

Re: What do these mean ?!!

They represent the grade or condition of the coin. Coins used to just have a verbal grade .. poor, fair, good, very good, fine, very fine, extremely fine, almost uncirculated and uncirculated. Sometimes they would add 'brilliant uncirculated". 20 or more years ago, the grading companies decided...
