I have two 1885's with the missing lock (or tuft) of hair. One of the coins grades about an F12 or so, and it is is convincing, the other grades about a G4 and is a bit questionable because of the amount of wear. I will recheck all my Victorian coins again to see if I can find others.

"These are tough to distinguish" You are right - these are tough to distinguish. Very tough. "and I may be 100% wrong" Nope. You are actually 100% right! Congradulations!!!! Well done. The first (or top) obverse comes from (if I remember right) a 1900 dated 5c coin, and the secon...

dave62,

Giving the coins away is not possible as I don't have them. But you do get an A for effort. And your guess is a fairly decent one. Any thoughts on what the Obverses are?

Obverse Test - Which One is It???

Here's a test for the 5c collectors. Below are images of two different 5c Victorian coins. The images are of uncirculated coins to make ID'ing them easier. Worn coins of course present a much bigger challenge. Your test: Determine if one or two different obverses present, and which one(s) is it. Let...

Unique because for all the $2 coins that have been minted so far (about 600,000,000), this is the first I have seen with the core hole so far off center, and with the core missing. So this almost never occurs. Second, even if there are another 10 coins of this same year with the core hole this far o...

A few 1891 5c varieties, starting with an A/V...

Below is are images of a few nice 1891 5c varieties starting with a A/V. At first glance, the A/V appears like a plugged V. But with a microscope its easy to see the doubling at the top of the V (which is sort of visible in the blow-up of the V). Not shown is the Double T in GRATIA. There is also a ...

I have a DX5 and I find the optics are weak. I also have one of those hand held digital videocamera/microscope's that take images up to 1.3 megapixels in size. The optics are much better than with a DX5, giving much better resolution to an image. Also, this device costs less than a DX5.

I will have to get back with the photos on this one. I can't get the macro function on my camera to work. And its going to take a while to figure out what the problem is, or if the camera needs to be repaired.

You are right it is an inverted N. But its also blundered. So, it can be called a Blundered Inverted N. Are there any other inverted N's in Victorian coinage?

Thanks. Here is an image of the 2 N's. The differences are easy to spot in a side by side image. But when viewed one at a time, its harder.

Interesting. If the double/blundered N is the same in all 6 coins, and if at least two of them have a different reverse, then that should indicate a reverse die was changed while the obverse was still in use. One reverse with both stems missing and one reverse with both stems intact. I have another ...

Nice! The first and third images are a large 2, the middle image is the small 2. A large 2 with full stems or a large 2 with no stems are the harder ones to find (your 1st and 3rd images in the previous posting). The large 2 with the missing right stem is the most common. How does the double N in th...
