Re: Anyone on Vancouver Island to help sort a collection?
Don't ever sell your coins to the same person who gave you the "estimates", unless you know him well and have done business before. This is especially true if you don't know what you really have. A little clue as to what you inherited would help anyone on this site to help. Is it modern RC...

Re: Victoria Large Cent Census
What a wonderful, and extremely valuable, project!!! Accuracy counts, so make sure any submissions EXACTLY match what we all put into Charlton's 65th edition. Only 80 specific coins were included out of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of varieties to choose from.

Re: 1976 penny
It looks like 2 coins were glued together and the adhesive stayed on the penny. It's really hard to tell without it in hand but, from the photo, it looks like adhesive.

Re: strange coins ......no info
Neither is a coin. I think that they are both tokens/inserts/medallions from the Mint. I have the second one in junk or miscellaneous bins at shows ... probably from EXPO67, the 1967 World's Fair in Montreal. It also celebrated the 100th anniversary on Canadian Confederation. The first one looks lik...

Re: Grading Coins
AG3 means "Almost Good, Shelton grade of 3". In reality, it really means a coin that is barely readable with almost the entire design obliterated. If you are just starting out, you should purchase a copy of either Charlton or Haxby or Whitman's annual coin book.... you should buy a book(s)...

Re: Last updates in the Price Guide
I'm very familiar with Zoell and his works and I looked at it .. you are probably right about the similarities. I was just making note of what could be a discrepancy. I co-wrote the variety section on large cents in the back of the 2011 Charlton and they used the wrong photo as well .. one that Bria...

Re: Last updates in the Price Guide
I'm not sure if you even have the correct picture for the generic 1896 far 6 Large Cent. Most TPG's have stopped certifying this coin because the initial one listed in Charlton (and then Trends) was not even the furtherest of the far 6's. Since the final digit (the 6) was handpunched into the workin...

Do you have a picture and a price? You would be better to place your post/thread down in the buy, sell, trade section of this site.

Re: Toronto area appraising?
Anything after 1967, put in your pocket and spend at Tim Horton's. I would highly recommend that you check out a copy of the 2012 Charlton coin guide from the library (or spend $25 to buy one) that has a variety section in the back on dollars .. a few of your 1965's have a possibility of being somet...

Re: Various half dollar and silver dollar canadian coins
Unless they are very high grade, almost all are very common and worth about scrap silver price. Depending on where you are, you can go to a nearby coin show and dealers will give you about 88-90% of scrap price (worn coins weigh less than new ones). Full silver price today is 34.20. Each face dollar...

Re: Toronto area appraising?
It all depends on the number that you are talking about. If it's more than 25-30, then I would suggest that you first either buy, or get from a library, a copy of Charlton's or Haxby's Canadian coin guide. Just use it to set aside those that look like they have a substantial premium over to others t...

Re: Where can I get rolls of brand new Canadian coins?
I see them go out of TD banks all the time .. I didn't know that there was any change. You can also get them from friends who work at high-volume commercial entities (Canadian Tire, McD's, Horton's etc)

Re: New Canadian gold coins?
Just make sure that you pay as close to scrap that you can and know how to covert from grams and grains to % of troy ounces ... the RCM puts out some very small coins for a huge mark-up. I would suggest that you buy things on the secondary market rather than from the mint or post office.... you will...

Re: Found old cion
If you go down to the Token subforum on this site, you will see an explanation from me on another token series. Yours is much the same, but deals with Upper Canada rather than Montreal Tokens. Tokens in your series were made for 1850, 1852, and 1854. They are sometimes referred to as St Georges toke...

Re: Bank of Upper Canada
I would imagine that you are talking about the token with St George slaying the dragon on the Obverse. The Bank of Upper Canada was started in 1820 in York, Ont (Toronto). Many banks and merchants issued tokens through the first half of the 19th century, because there was no coinage for trade/goods ...
