Unreal.....

Post by mkb » Wed Feb 25, 2009 6:21 pm

A broken up 2009 Specimen set (each coin sold seperately) just sold for $109.68 US, with the 1c coin going for $41.00. Yet you can buy the entire set from an online retailer for $38.45 US.

A 2009 100th Anniversary dollar of the Montreal Canadiens sold for $74.95, yet you can buy this item for $59.95 US.

Either prices are getting ahead of themselves, or the online retailers are behind the curve....

You have to wonder if this is part of an indication of renewed interest in Canadian coins, and coins in general. All the dealers I have bought from in the past 6 months or so report strong demand for Canadian coins - despite the economic uncertainty at present. And all of these dealers have raised their price; in some cases, considerably. Even dealers that almost always had below trends prices now seem to have many items priced above trends. Some of the dealers I have dealt with said that a few years ago, almost no one bought Canadian material. Now, they have difficulty getting inventory. Maybe higher prices will free up more inventory....

This doesn't make sense to me, why would a set be much cheaper than the value of each coin individually ? could somebody explain that to me please..

The initial post is 11 years old. You have to be sure what "currency" you are talking about, US or Canada. An idividual coin may have been graded or very high grade. Sets, especially from the RCM, are granny bait only.

I was curious so I checked out ebay.
The 2009 Specimen set with the Blue Heron loonie, latest set sold for $60.
Individual coins not including 1 cent which I couldn't find as sold for a total of $65.75 with the Blue Heron loonie selling for $43. My guess is that the only way to get these is from a set and the specimen loonies are not are not available in any other finish.
