As I was going through my pennies with a magnet to differentiate the magnetics from the non-magnetics, I came across a 2002P magnetic one! Though this site does not list magnetic pennies for this year, wikipedia does say that the mint started the production of pennies with a steel core in 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coins_of_t ... ian_dollar).

Did anyone come across such a penny and how rare would such pennies be?

Hello paraxis,

There is the 2002 1-cent coin non-magnetic and
there is the 2002 P 1-cent coin magnetic.

You can see the alloy used here : 1 cent 2002.

How rare these coins are?
Mintage
  • 1 cent 2002 - 1952-2002 : 716 357 000
  • 1 cent 2002 - 1952-2002 P : 114 212 000

The process I use for determining which are mangetic, (if i don't use the magnet), is to check for the "P". that tells me the core is steel. I believe that will work for any date.
