Estimating value between the listed grades

Post by KirkD » Mon Apr 07, 2014 3:51 pm

My first post here. Although I enjoy old Canadian coins, I can't say I am very knowledgable. A collector is interested in purchasing an 1870 Canada Quarter from me that ICCS has graded as AU 58. I do not know what to ask for it nor whether any offer he would make is in the ball park. I have a Charlton Book and I see this site has values as well, but they show AU 50 ($520) and MS 60 ($1,110) but nothing in between. I can see that the value tends to climb faster once you get to the higher end of the grading in general. I am also aware that what these coins actually sell for on eBay is quite a bit less than the values posted on this site. All this to say that I don't know what the tell the fellow or what would be a reasonable offer if I ask him? So the question is, what would be a reasonable amount to ask of the collector who is interested in this particular coin?

You can't go by the prices in Trends or Charlton's or this site. Normally, say for a VF-30 where it has prices only for 20 and 40, you go anbout 2/3 of the way between the two to get the "book" price. Your selling price would be between 60-80% of the "book" price. I have no references with me since I'm on the road, but that's a rule of thumb. If you have a scarcer coin or a scarce variety, then you may be able to sell it for 90-150% of what the book price is. I would look on Ebay in the ended or bought auctions and see what they have sold for there .. that gives you 90 days of sales .. just take it from there. For your coin, a '58, I would get a book price of about 85-90& between 50 & 60 and use the 60-80 rule from there.

Thank you, Bill in Burl, for that very helpful information. It is much appreciated. If I understand correctly, the range for the selling value of an 1870 Canada Quarter in AU 58 ICCS condition would be calculated as follows using this site's values (There are no records for anything higher than EF-45 on eBay for 1870):

Site book value: AU 50: $520
Site book value: MS 60: $1,100
Difference: $580

Estimated lower 'book' value for AU 58 = (.85 x $580) + $520 = $1,013
Estimated upper 'book' value for AU 58 = (.90 x $580) + $520 = $1,042

Estimated lower selling price = .6 x $1,013 = $607.80
Estimated upper selling price = .8 x $1,042 = $833.60

Did I understand you aright? Again, thank you for that very helpful way of estimating selling price.
