Peculiar Canadian 1 cent coin

Post by rrobertk » Thu Feb 23, 2017 2:34 pm

I am looking for comments from the gallery of experienced collectors for the coin in the attached photos. I am not a collector by any measure, but this 1 cent coin deserves an explanation. What say ye?
Coin: 1971 Canadian 1 cent
Dia: varies from .6975 - .7080" vs the normal .7525" coin.
Thickness at Rim: varies from .0925 - .0970" vs the normal .0600" coin.
Weight: Unknown, but the coin is clearly heavier than a normal 1 cent coin when compared on a balance beam.
Other Notes:
- Lettering on the reverse is significantly thicker (bolder) than normal, but not as sharp.
- Image on the reverse appears to be heavier than normal, but not as crisp.
- The obverse effigy appears to have been struck lighter, with less image detail showing, lettering is barely visible although the font appears to also be blunt (bold).
- The obverse effigy and field surfaces are very craggy when examined closely. Not so on the reverse.
- The rim diameter is very close to that of a Canadian 10 cent coin, but is spherical versus the flat rim of a normal 1 cent or 10 cent coin. There are no seams, cracks, scoring or machining marks of any sort on the rim and it is "rolled" very accurately to the surface of the field on both sides of the coin. (what the ??)
I live 10 minutes from the Royal Canadian Mint. I wonder if someone there would be willing to share their opinion?

I think someone was trying to make a ring. Go to the link and then watch the YouTube video.[url]I think someone was trying to make a ring. Go to the link and then watch the YouTube video.

It could also be a dryer coin.
I was thinking maybe it was spooned but it
seems too round and smooth for that
Either way, it's PMD.
