1912 $5 gold Canadian coin

Post by carlg » Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:01 am

So I just ordered a pcgs graded AU55 1912 gold coin for $470 plus tax and shipping. Does anyone have any thoughts about the wholesale or retail market for this purchase? I think I will like it once I see it. I am hesitant to buy from ebay, and prefer well known stores that give deals. I think it only has 1/4 ounce pure gold, so I will not be seeing my money back as a bullion investment.

Was that in Canadian or US dollars? You paid close to full Trends for it. Usually you can get coins at shows or brick and mortar for 70-80% of Trends, unless it's a scarcity.

It was CAD...I know sometimes I can get a better deal with a little more work, but sometimes I just can not make it to places. I intent to go to the Toronto expo you mentioned though and bring sufficient cash so if I see something (s), I can get it (them).

So the coin arrived today from J&M. It looks great. I checked the pcgs related auctions and I think I did good. I checked the melt value of gold, and I think I did well. Most important, unlike my other First Gold Canadian coin pcgs MS gold 1914 $10 coin, this is actually the earliest I have and I got it at a price I can afford....

Great info, thanks a lot. I am still looking for coins MS 63 or 64 in the years 1912 to 14 $5 to $10...but only the good deals (I am not interested in the really expensive grades). Based on this according to recent sales I paid about wholesale market rate. Also, since it contains 7.52grams of pure gold...I think I did well for a pcgs slabbed collectible coin.
