1963 Pennie's in cellophane

Post by Broknarrow » Mon May 30, 2022 9:37 am

Newbie question, we came upon a set of 6 Pennie’s in cellophane. They are dated 1963 and one has scratches on the face. What was the purpose of this?

Are they 6 CENTS in one cellophane package or are they in 6 individual packages?

I have a set of the 12 from 1963, and they seem to show up occasionally. I do not know if they were put out by the RCM directly as the cellophane isn't stamped RCM, but they are their circulation/BU coins and are in mint state. I greatly dislike the PL designation as the RCM doesn't use it, but having one of these coins graded could put them there. They are in tear apart single pockets, and not from the standard mint sets. Probably not at the highest end of the MS scale unless very well cared for, but generally the coins would have a book value of $0.15-$1.00 each - higher end if they look really good. See the CaC values. The scratch you suggest could be an issue. That said, without a picture, it is hard to know.

Interesting information, thanks. I’m on the road for another week or so. I’ll post a picture when I get home.

If they are individually wrapped they are most likely bonus coins found in potato chip bags.

Ah - I had not seen any and I am a bit too young for that, but they were discussed here.

Apparently 1963 and 1964 pennies were in the bags, and a small number of bags had dimes!

There is also a story about the chips here, starting on p24 and details about pennies in the bags are on p26. Apparently just a promotional gimick for an industry with lots of competition.

Finally made it home. Took some pictures as promised. After closer inspection I see 2 coins have scratches. Having issues loading pictures.

I remember individual pennies coming in chip bags that year. Some kind of a promo.

Not sure why it won’t let me post any pictures. Message says too large, that was one picture.
