New here - start me in the right direction

Post by Hughy » Tue Sep 20, 2022 7:56 pm

Hello all, I recently inherited a coin collection I need to know more about. Need a trustworthy place where I can determine value and what not.

If you want me to post a pic of certain coin, let me know.

Mostly in collectors books - circulated
Quarters from 1918-39
Quarters from 53-71
Nickels from 61-78
Half dollars from 61-79
Half dollars from 40-52
Silver dollars from 58-75
Mercury head dimes
Lincoln head cents 42-62
Small cents 1920-52
Large cents 1859-1920

Welcome.

You do not say where you are from so it is hard to tell you of a place to take your coins.
Value depends a lot on the grade of the coins. Some of what you have listed would only be
worth face value while others could have some value depending on the variety and condition.
Are you looking to sell all at once or are you looking for max value which will take longer and
involves in more work.
Perhaps you could post some pics of a couple of them to give us an idea of what you have.

First, you should buy a copy of a recent (last 5 years) copy of either Charlton's or Haxby"s guide to Canadian coins. It will list all the dates and some varieties of any dates that have them. It will give you a full, retail, inflated price for each "grade" of the coin.

In the front of the book will be a good section on how to grade each series of Canadian coinage. Get an estimate of what you think is the grade and then start recording the info. No one on here is going to look at every single coin that you have. Once you have ID'd what you think that your coin grade is, look at the prices in the book, or look here:
https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

Again the price listed is not realistic to what it is actually worth. Unless you have a scarcity, you MAY be able to sell the coins for 40-60% of what's listed for each coin. If you sell them as sets to a dealer or collector you will get less than that. Try Kijiji or Facebook or an ad in one of the buy/sell sections of some coin sites. You have lots of woirk to do until you find out what you have in your hands.

"Now for silver coins, after 1920, all silver is .800 pure. A face dollar (1 dollar or 2 50's or 4 25s, etc) is worth $23.90 Cdn at scrap silver price. So even if you have well-worn silver coins not in holders they have value, but a well-worn coin has had some of the silver worn off. Your dollars are each worth the @$23.90 or more, so don't take less." Each dollar or face dollar contains 0.6 troy oz of pure silver

XXXXXX I made a typo error in my calculations, transposing numbers. The scrap silver price in Cdn dollars is roughly $16, so don't let the dollars go for less than that, approx.

You should be easily able to get a used copy of Charlton or Haxby from Whitman books on Ebay for less than $10. They will help you out IMMENSELY!

Silver dollar weight: 23.33 g
Fineness: 0.8
Actual precious weight: 18.664 g
1 troy ounce: 31.1035 g
XAG: $26.3069/oz $0.845784/g

Melt value = XAG * APW = $15.7857

OK, old age got to me. I was transposing the .800 fineness into the actual troy ounces (or portion of an ounce) in a Canadian dollar. Each dollar or face dollar contains 0.6 troy oz of silver, no more no less. Don't get old or you'll confuse 0.6 with 0.8. At this instant (0850), silver is 19.84 US, so Canadian worth of a silver dollar (unworn) is $16.01 Cdn.
