Canadian Mint bag of coin

Post by DUNAJSKI » Wed Oct 05, 2022 12:37 pm

I have come across an old Canadian Mint coin bag of 200 / 50 cent pieces. It's still sealed with lead on the tie string. There's a tag number of 503621. Does anyone know anything about these? What year it might be? Should I open it or leave it intact?

That is cool, it has to be silver, the nickel 50 cents were in larger bags, you should research more keep intact and chuck onto one of the major auctions like RCNA or Heritage FUN but shipping that to Dallas would be expensive. Try contacting Mr. Mackenzie at Saskatoon Coin Club he seems to have much knowledge in these things, maybe a dental xray would show the date. Good luck !

Well, both SPP Ottawa and pginrh (who wrote the 68th edition Charton 50 cent variety section) would be drooling. I'll send an email to them with the link. They normally are not on this forum.

For some reason, it makes a difference how you initially open this thread on this site. I actually answered this earlier by opening the "Topics" section. Here is the link with my other comments and information. I'm trying to find out the approx date/year/decade of the bag and whether it was RCM or a bank.

Here is the other avenue for opening the thread and it shows NO replies.

This was part of my Grandfathers collection. So far I don't know a lot about it, only that it's silver coins inside.

I just replied to the message you sent me (via eBay). Apologies to the belated reply, as I have been away from home for a good part of the last three months.

I am definitely curious what you find out and what might be inside... it looks well kept by the colour of the material. Do let us know! Inquiring minds and all...

I opened a similar looking bag about 10 years ago...except it was 100 pieces X $ 1.00, and they were 1963.
Very "baggy" coins, but the bag they were in had clearly been handled and weathered more than the one pictured here.

I realize that doesn't tell you ANYTHING about the contents of this bag, but just thought I would mention that 1963 dollars were in a similar style bag, with that same lead seal.

Congrats !
It's an awesome find, and I'm sure not many left so original.

Try a magnet to see what you find

The mint may be able to tell you by the serial number on the tag.
