Melt Value Canadian silver 50 cent coins

Post by Was » Sun Dec 11, 2022 10:11 pm

I wonder if someone can comment on my efforts at selling approximately 150 Canadian 50 cent silver coins 1950's to 1967. It seems local buyers offer less than melt value with varying prices. Thanks for any suggestions.

A dealer will never give you full melt value because he has also to make a profit at melt.
It also depends on the condition of the coins. Unless you have some that are in MS condition,
it sounds like what you have are Queen Elizabeth 50 cents which are not worth much above
melt if they are circulated. You don’t say where you are from so we can help you further.

Well, silver is at $23.38/troy ounce this AM, US$. With the exchange rate at $1.35, that's $31.56. With each face dollar equal to .6 troy ounces, that's about $19 Cdn per face dollar. Since they are 1/2 dollar, then full scrap would be $9.50 each for a new coin with no wear, weighing what it was when struck. The dealer has to make a little and he has to allow for the daily price changes for the world silver market, you would be very lucky to get more than $8.50 each, less if the coins are worn much.

With ebay, you have 13% seller fees, plus Paypal fees, if used, plus shipping. I don't think that there would be much difference with going to a dealer.

Thank you all so much for clarifying my issue. I am on Vancouver Island. This site is a great help for those of us who are not knowledgeable about coin collecting values.
