I think i might have found a gold mine

Post by Sp3nc3r » Sat Mar 23, 2024 5:36 pm

There is a antique store that i recently visited on my lunch break, and i think it has quite good prices. They have banknotes, coins both american and canadian, and also a few tokens. Half dollars are $15 and dollars are $25-$30 depending on the coins grade. Do you think that these are good prices? I picked up 2 silver dollars, 1964 and 1953. Also 2 half dollars, 1951, and Newfoundland 1911. Personally this is the cheapest option for me as far as getting coins at the moment.

Were the prices in US or Canadian dollars? Scrap silver price for Canadian coinage is a little less than $20 Canadian so that would be for each face dollar with next to no wear. If you sold to a dealer, you would get $16-17 Cdn. If they were US coins, they would be worth more. If you paid Canadian $$, then you got about average prices, but you could probably do better with a little looking around.

CAD. Where can i find these prices? eBay has taxes + shipping, so unless its specific i usually try to avoid that.

As you probably know, condition is the major factor in the value of a coin. A couple of grades can make
a big difference in how much a coin is worth.
I have to assume that the coins you purchased are of average grade considering where you bought them.
If that is the case then I would have to say that you overpaid a bit as they would not be worth much over bullion price. Have you tried kijiji, there are no taxes and if you live in the area, you can pick them up and save shipping.
If you can post some photos of some of your purchases, we would probably be able to tell you how you did.

If you get the coins you want at a price you’re happy with then who can say it’s wrong. If you expect to make money at coin collecting then you might not be doing it correctly. Far be it from me to say how to go about it , I see something I like and if I can afford it I buy it knowing full well I probably won’t make anything if I ever go to sell it.
But in the end you have to be satisfied with your choice.
