2006 Snowflake Dollar - 228 Minted???

Does anyone have any insight into how many of the 2006 Snowflake dollar (with music CD) were minted? The 2007 RCM annual report lists only 228, and two times now, the RCM Customer Service Department has confirmed this number. Yet at least one dealer thinks that they alone have sold that amount. Does anyone have any idea as to how many of them were made? Is 228 the correct number? If it is, this will make the 2006 Snowflake dollar one of the lowest mintage 1 dollar coins in RCM history.

2006 Crystal Snowflake

Here's a part of the offical launch text for this coin:

This 14KT gold coin features an elaborate star-shaped snowflake composed of embedded authentic Swarovski crystals. Worldwide mintage is 1,000. Retail price: $1,520.95.

But that's for the 300 dollars coin...

Nope. The Crystal Snowflake was sold out at 998 coins. This 228 number is for the Snowflake dollar with music CD. Here is the "confirmation" from the RCM:

"Thank you for contacting the Royal Canadian Mint. Per your request, 228 Holiday Carols CD and Sterling Silver Dollar Sets were sold. "

This means that the RCM keep some of their products into their archives ? They didn't really sell every product they strike, but keep 2 of each ?

This coin is sold out ? If yes, there are 230 coins minted (228 sold and the RCM still keep two of them). If no, there are more than 230 coins minted but only 228 sold.

The gold Snowflake coin was sold out. in the case where the mintage is 1000, and the number sold is 998, it likely means 2 coins were defective and could not be sold. As for the silver dollar, if I remember right, the advertised mintage was in the area of 15,000 or so. Obviously, not a good seller.

the mintage for the blue snowflake silver dollar was alot higher than 228.( more like 15-30 thousand) they were such poor sellers that you can pick them up today for something like 50% off of the original price.

One thing for sure, 15,000 of this coin did not sell. I can easily tell this from the lack of trades on eBay. In fact, this coin hardly comes up. 1 dollar coins with issues in the 5,000 zone come up way more frequently than does this coin.

Annual report from the mint says it all...

page 46, annual report 2007
Musique des FĂȘtes et dollar en argent sterling 228
(French)
Holiday Carols CD and Sterling Silver Dollar 228
(English)

Either the mint has the wrong numbers or there is only 228 snowflake silver dollar with CD...
