Old Canadian (1683) coin - can anyone identify this?

Post by Darrell.Fluet » Mon Dec 04, 2017 9:30 pm

I found this old coin(?) token(?) recently but I cant tell what it is, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
NOTE - I had posted this a few months ago and had some helpful responses, but now I have cleaned some of the crud off of it and you can see things better.

It seems to be made of copper or bronze but that's a guess.
It also seems to have 4 coats of arms around he front face, or maybe three coats of arms and a crown at the top?
There is lettering around the outside but I cant read most of it.

The opposite side has a large barrel or something in the middle.
The interesting part is that now that's it a bit cleaned I can see numbers on it...and its either 1891 or 1683 ??? I cant tell which way is up so I am not sure.

Any ideas?

First picture rotate it counterclockwise 90 degrees and it should be right side up...

Last picture rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and it will be right side up..

The very last picture looks like it's a crown with a shield and a lion below.

To me that suggest it's English so I would start there...

I looked through all the english and came up with nothing that's similar...

my best suggestion would be to go to the library and pick up a krause catalog and start looking... your pictures have some of the legends cut off so it's pretty hard to tell ..

I'd recommend turning the coin right side up (I've told you which end is up in previous post) and take a picture of the coin lying flat... not in your fingers so we can see the whole thing.. .also for me it would be nice if you put a known coin beside it.. just so I could get a reference for size..

Here are some additional shots of the full coin, plus a comparison shot beside a Canadian quarter for scale.

I did more googling and I think it might be a Belgian or Netherlands penny or half penny. The marking look very similar and it sounds like the early fur traders used coins from a number of European countries.
It also looks like this thing has been worn pretty badly on the edges...maybe it was in sand or rocks on a lake shore? That would explain all the original crud and corrosion.

You might be onto something there with the Netherlands... they have used lions in the past.

30 Stuivers or Koggerdaalder is pretty close.. not an exact match... but CLOSE!
