1979 US penny

The D mint mark is filled in. Is this an error during minting or damage from age?

That is known as a broken post. Not really an error, it is part of the minting process.
Quite common on D and P mintmarks and adds no value.
Nice photography and cropping, just what we need when evaluating coins.
