1962 Penny Error #k86b?

Postby Coin Gunner » Thu Oct 19, 2017 11:54 am

Hi there again,

Since my last question, I have still been enjoying sorting through my dads coins.
Some of his coin flips note a serial number which I assume corresponds to an error. I also found a one page sheet for example (see photo) where he had sketched a particular error beside a corresponding serial#.
For this post ~ 62' coin, he sketched some lines between the 1 and the leaf, which I confirmed under low (6x or 8x) magnification. I reviewed the 1962 list for errors on this website and I guess the closest description I could find would be the Guitar Zoell #K86c. Which leads me into my two part question below:

Part 1: Is there some abbreviation list of errors somewhere on the internet or in a book? and if yes, what is the name of the website or book? For example one of the one photos I provide, list error abbreviations R74d, R74h, R76d, R77q, *K79n, *K86b, etc. etc. I tried a generic google search but had no success when searching these abbreviations.

Part 2: If there is no book or website, does anyone than know what a *K86c error is entitled or called?

Thanks in advance for the help from the more experienced folk, mabey one day I will be answering questions in lieu of asking them :D

Lastly, I appologize for the unclear photos, I only have a baby magnifying glass. I think its time to invest into something a little more useful for my new found hobby.

Hans Zoell published pamphlets from the late 50's up through the early 70's and not every year. Unfortunately, I gave all my Zoell books to a younger collector, so I can't look up your numbers. in the front of each pamphlet, he lists the "codes" that he used to identify the error or variety. The first capital letter is the TYPE of error or variety (and whether it was a major or minor one) and the last small letter is a sequential list of that type of error for that specific date. He changed his numbering system after his 3rd edition in the mid 60's, so the numbering ID's from the first 3 editions bear no semblance to the last 4 editions into the 70's. The Zoell pamphlets (available on Ebay or Abebooks from time to time) are not all-inclusive so, say, edition 5 will only include items that weren't in edition 4 .. they were for new discoveries. I think edition 4 is the best one to find and most inclusive.

When I talked about Zoell's numbering system, I forgot to tell you what the digits in the middle were. They are the sequential dates for the coins. So all 1858's will be a "1", the 1859's will be "2", the 1876 will be "3", etc. So your R74d is a Major variety for 1950 and the 4th variety/error listed for that date(d). Your R76 is for 1952 and a Major variety and on and on and on. If you look in a Charlton and use 1858 as a #1 and 1859 as a "2", count each year that pennies were minted and you will see that "74" is 1950 and so on. He starts over with the numbers at 1 for each new denomination. Try to find one of the Zoell books and read the front (intro) of it first.

Very interesting! Numbering errors/varieties seems to be a whole art in itself.

Grateful as always for your time and teachings.
