1859 Canadian Large Penny Double Stamped Face??? New error??

Post by seahawksluvr78 » Fri Feb 07, 2014 2:02 pm

Hi there everyone. We recently inherited thousands of old coins and bills. I am going through each coin to see if any are worth money.

I came across a 1859 Penny which appears the Queen has been punched twice which of course is not a listed error. Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks for your help

Post-mint damage. Someone has scribed a line just inside the outer edge of the portait lower left. Maybe a knife, maybe a thin chisel.

Thanks for your feedback. what is your qualifications to make such a statement or is this simply your opinion/observations. When observed under a microscope the line is uniform and does not indicate any scraping

By the naked eye, the line is not uniform. I think that it is clearly a cut.... look at the lip and how it goes down the neck line.

I co-wrote the Victiora large cent variety section in the back of the 2011 Charlton and have collected Victoria cents for the last 30 years ... I have about 10,000 of the series with about 1,000 1859's. I'm not a bumpkin.

If it was done by hand when viewed under the magnifying glass you would see scraping and it would not be consistent. But thanks for your feedback, I disagree with you. When someone scrapes something it is impossible to maintain consistent pressure and the exact angle there would be a degree of difference which there is not. It is as though it was done in one movement not many....

but we are all entitled to our opinions....

maybe its something you have never seen.....

Then it was done with a laser or heat pen of some sort .. it was definitely PMD and done by hand. It's not eevn close to following the relief outline. It's a garage job and I have no idea what you mean by 'scraping" .. it's a clean cut that couldn't follow the outline.

Indeed it seems odd that Victoria was given an Adam's apple.

seahawkslvr... first I want to congratulate you and your team in the superbowl...

Secondly I have to agree with Bill on this one.... and Bill kinda knows his Vicky cents.

If you honestly believe this coin doesn't have PMD... I would highly suggest you look at getting this coin certified it would be very very valuable.
