1859 doubled/repunched

Post by SurlyLung » Sat Nov 14, 2020 3:50 am

There is a lot of doubling on the obverse and there is obvious doubling in the 5 and 8 and slightly in the 1 on the date. The 9 looks fairly normal. I am wondering what I have here. I included the better quality photos. There is a lot on the coin that my phone camera just won’t pick up through a loupe. P

Can you post some good photos of the complete Obv & Rev, the Reverse especially. You have shown a few markers that are common to a couple scarcer coins. The "C" in Canada, like yours, is a marker for 4-5 other Reverses. The doublings of the date digits are fairly common .. the reverse dies took a beating in pounding out 10 million thin bronze coins.

I threw a couple more other examples just for fun.

Your picture's of the Reverse and Obverse are a little blurry is that a die crack at the bottom of leaf 9?

If there are any die cracks on the Obverse or Reverse maybe you could make mention of it as they are hard to see if any on your pictures that is a good clue to seeing what you might have.

You are absolutely correct. Yes, there is a crack at (I’m assuming?) leaf 9. Its the only crack I could find. I’m still reasonably new to this and either missed it or got too excited over the doubling as I love error coins. Anyway, here are some better pictures (I hope).

That helps SurlyLung, the die crack you showed is actually leaf 11 but that's all good as I think it is a Haxby PC59-33- 17 + E19. If you are not familiar with the Haxby site go to (Haxby Catalogue of the Canadian 1859 Large Cent) when there push on Haxby numbers and find PC59-33, 17 + E19 it will have a blow up of the coin.

You are correct the 8 + 5 have doubling if that is your coin

I will have a look at that site. Also, I have a lot of interesting 1800’s error type coins so I will be posting again soon.

Thank You

Here is the link for the Haxby site. BTW, the leaves on the Reverse are numbered clockwise from the top, with leaf #1 being at about 12:30. For the 1859's there is always a vine break at 7 and another at 13 .. a vine break at leaf 2 comes later on the the mintage year. Yes, your D/C is at 11. There are 16 leaves.

Thanks again.
Is there a way to fast find the Haxby codes besides constantly posting here or manually going through each one as there are a lot.

Once you get on to it things come easy, if you study your coin for die cracks or doubled letters then go to the site put your arrow on ID my coin don't push on it and some options will come up like your die crack @ leaf 11 go to ID my reverse the reverse will come up push on leaf 11 it will show every die crack on all 1859 @ leaf 11 you pick your die crack that you think is yours and above the picture push that number all the stats for that coin will be there.

Good luck, another thing about the site same ID my coin tab if you push on it all the leaf 7 die breaks will show up and combinations of numbers to that die deuteriations that helps make you find your coin faster sometimes, same as when you go to ID my Reverse push on a number like the 9 every double punched 9 will show up

Hope this helps a bit but you just have to do a little hamming try things

Again, thank you. This is far more than I expected and it is quite clear I have a lot of homework to do. Luckily, thanks to Bonnie Henry’s new health guidelines, I have a lot of time to do it.

Have a good weekend.
Craig

Ps, I threw the photo in for the homework effect. 😉

One last question, why is there a bomb emoji on this thread?
