1890 H "Flying I" Variety, Looks Different From Listing, Do I Have It

Hi again

Had a lazy afternoon to look through unchecked purchases and found this.

I managed to get a decent image of the relevant part of the obverse, the DEI of the legend.

It looks like an unserifed "I" was punched over a Flying I. Am seeking opinions if I have the listed variety or a variant, as it looks different from the website image. Thanks for looking.

Hi archerg!

Yes I do believe it is the what they call on this site the Flying "I" but there is quite a few different "I"s in Dei on the 1890 Large cents. Here are a few different ones in my collection of 1890. By the way I like the bead clash on yours!

Thanks for showing all of those, my collection is relatively basic and I was unaware the variety could take so many forms. The bead clash you mention escapes my eyes and is a bit beyond my knowledge of coin making, but I'll read up on it.

I see the die clash in person now, arcing above the Queen's hair. It was just luck my image setup captured it. My compliments on your eagle eye!

If you can pick up a copy of Rob Turner's "Dies and Diadems", published a few years ago, you will find some extensive pages on the 1890 strikes. I can see photos of all the coins covered in this thread. Very early on the "I" in Dei was damaged, so dies were repunched (hand-punched) so there are a pretty fair number of I's to see. You will even see 2 of these 1890 varieties in the 65th Charlton that covers all the Vicky varities in the back that we were allowed room for (only about 80) for 1858-1901. The entireTurner book(s) are an ABSOLUTE must for any collector that's going to delve into Vicky Large Cents. Each of his 5 well-illustrated books have a back section that is specifically for 1-3 individual dates with photos of the varieties/anomalies known at the time, as well as the background data that covers those dates. Just from a historical standpoint, his volumes follow the minting and steps/events that changed the way that Canada started their own coinage with much interchange between the Royal Mint, Heaton, and then back to Canada.

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge on the subject. It is all new information to me. I 100% agree that, if one wishes to build a meaningful collection, a deep dive into the available literature is one's first best step. That is the advice I share in stamp collecting, where I am better known.

I do not yet own any of Mr. Turner's books but what I've seen of them looks great, comprehensive and with excellent images.

Some of my posts will be routine to advanced collectors, but I'll try to ask good questions and post good images.

archerg,

Bill in Burl is the expert on the Large Cents on this site so I am sure he will be able to answer all your questions on the matter.
