1958 Canadian 1 cent (penny) in silver

Post by Stephanitly » Sun May 26, 2024 9:05 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone know more about this coin I just found. It is 1958 Canadian penny with QE obverse HOWEVER it is punched on a silver Im assuming dime blank. Would anyone know a rough guess to value or any leads to finding more information on it. Thank you so much for any assistance!

Certainly not on a dime blank, it has been plated with nickel or possibly mercury in the earlier years.
These were done as high school experiments in science class. It has no numismatic value.

Yes, what was posted is correct. We always get 3-4 inquiries like this every year. Just plating or coating.

Okay, Thank you. Is there a way to double check it is just playing without wrecking the coin? Also what are the “give always” to tell it is a plated coin? Just so moving forward I can spot that. Knowledge is power lol so any information in areas I don’t know or know little of then I’d love to expand. Thank you for the information so far. I didn’t even know that was a thing in schools.

One way of telling is that there were no silver cent planchets produced so you can rule that out.
It is not a silver dime planchet or the cent would not be fully formed as a dime is smaller and
thinner than a cent. Also we see these periodically on the various coin forums. There have been
occasions when they are plated silver and used for jewellery. I have seen them plated in silver, gold,
pink and cyan for various purposes.

Best would be an XRF, but a weight and magnet test is easier, most likely plated
