Hello,
I have a barely circulated 5 cent coin from 1999. The odd feature of it is that the bottom third of the date is barely visible (it almost looks like a small 1000). Has anybody seen a coin like this? Any ideas about what might have created this oddity? I'll add a photo if anybody actually has any interest in this question.
Thanks,
Bruce (everycountrycoins)

This should at least provide a general idea:

Is the 'field' of the coin, behind the digits, flat or is it a little dished in? A plugged die wouldn't affect 3 digits so sharply. The photo/scan is very fuzzy on my machine, but it looks like post mint damage (PMD) However, if there is no evidence of trauma, then we would need a clearer shot that can be magnified.

There are traces of what should be there (especially the tail of the last 9). Sorry about the photo. My camera wasn't really made for shooting details of coins. Since there is a bit of "smearing" in the affected area, you are probably right to suggest that it is PMD. I just wanted a second opinion from someone with experience with these things. Thanks!
