1913 5 cent die crack

Post by verdigris » Sat Jun 01, 2013 12:30 pm

A little brother to the die-cracked 1913 dime I posted here.

As I've pointed out in the second image, the reverse die crack on this fishscale runs from a denticle, across the imperial crown, through the 5, the N, and into the bottom of the T in CENTS. I don't believe it got any further but with so many fine scratches running in the same direction as the crack it's hard to be sure of much past that point. Although, this crack certainly had the potential of soon spliting the die. — Cheers

You can see a 1903 5-cents with the same kind of die crack here :

Thanks guys. I'll keep looking.

I've had that coin for almost 25 years and can't remember if I ever knew that crack existed or not.. :( ...keeping a better record now though.

Somewhat more recently acquired... got a 1893 obverse flawed planchet 5 cent last week. I'll post it when I get a chance.

Cheers
