1922 Error help please

Post by mmayer321 » Thu Oct 03, 2013 5:06 pm

Hi all,

Another post asking for an explanation of what happenned to this coin...

The F on the good coin is nice and straight. On the error coin, the top left part of the F is not the same.. I doubt this is an unlisted variety that will make me rich (lol)

So how could this error happen? Is it related to the line on the side of the rim at all?

Thanks

A result of uneven rounding down of the normally sharp edge of the die IMO. All those lines you see radiating from the incuse upwards towards the rim is die erosion. The outer edge of the die is worn away causing the straight lines of the relief close to the rim to become distorted when viewed at 90 degrees.

Cheers
