1953 Nickel NSF Near

Post by faulksanders » Sun Aug 13, 2017 12:47 am

I recently inherited my grandparents coin collection.
I know nothing about coins and this site has been a great place for research.
This is the only coin I'm not sure about.
I have 8 NSF 1953 nickel, but this one is different.
The edge is thicker and the leaf seem closer to the edge.
Is this a NSF near?

Looks like you have a winner.
That's a 1953 NSF Near.

Although there is glare, it looks to me like there IS a shoulder fold or strap.

I purchased a magnifying glass and I can't tell the different. I'm beginning to think it's the common nicklel. Regardless, I organized the collection, nothing valuable, but it's very neat to look at the old coins.
Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

Unfortunately these photos are not the best, however I downloaded and enlarged them.

As poor as they are, the coin does appear to be a NSF near.

I am poor at grading coins, but I would guess it is no better then a VG, maybe less due do the bad surface gouges. The value will be poor.

Bill and some others are much better when comes to grading.

Where do you live? Are there any coin shops or coin clubs near you?

Also do you subscribe to or ever purchase the Canadian Coin News?

If you do, you will see that there are a large number of coin shows coming up all over Canada including; Woodstock, Brampton, London, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Edmonton and so many more locations.

Try visiting one near you. The people there are always willing to help you out and who knows, someone may even make an offer.

Good luck.
