1951 commemorative 5 cent
1951 commemorative 5 cent
I found a 1951 commemorative 5 cent that is flaking a little on both sides. This is the coin with the nickel mine on it. This coin is made of nickel right? Any opinions? The flaking in the picture is on the hair. Thanks

It was only the business strikes that were plated.
The 1951 Commemorative was 100% nickel.

I don't think that is flaking on your coin.
Hard to tell without actually seeing it but it
looks like something has attacked the surface
and discoloured it.
If in the future you could show both sides of the coin,
it makes it easier to determine the cause.

Little flakes came off when I scratched with finger nail. Noticed something that looked odd and had to touch it. Would be hard to take picture of other side, only small spot at top of chimney. Will bring to a coin shop for a look. Just seems odd, this coin should be only nickel. Thanks
