10 cents 1881 Obv 1 Error

Post by zonerzz » Wed Dec 20, 2017 2:02 pm

Hello ,

I am a new collector who inherited from his father , I am trying to do my best to grade and understand how coins collection work . My goal is to finish his collection or at least try because it could be very costly . I have this 1881 obv 1 coins that I think is in Vf-ef condition but there is an error on the I of gratia and on the I of Regina . Does anybody know how this error is called and if add any value to the coin .

thank you

I will give the same answer as the other forum you posted this on.
Will need full size picture of front and back.
Hard to give a grade of a partial coin.

I dont really mind the grade , all I wanted to know is what kind of error is this and it add any value to the coin , I cant take a better picture but it is clear to me that theres something weird with the 'i' of gratia and regina ... if you dont know what it is then dont post I guess .

There is too much glare and reflection, let alone the size of the photo, to tell what, if anything, is going on with the "i's". No one can answer your question without better photography, so don't come down hard on the folks trying to help you.

I no longer have my Zoell books to see if this has been recognized before. It looks to me like the "i" has been repunched on the die and the guy with the punch and the hammer both didn't get it flush with the die, nor exactly on top of it. This would be a variety, not an error ... there should be more coins out there exactly like this. How many, who knows. Unless all the coins struck that year were made from the same die, then there would be a small premium over a normal one .. it is a fairly common date

You can buy a Charlton Annual coin guide. Every year they will have a different denomination for varieties in the back(60-80 or so). I don't know what year had the 10 cent in the back. The best way to find the true value of anything is to look at the Ebay "sold" prices. Those go back at least 3 months for items that have actually "sold" (not just up for auction). Just go ahead and put in your search parameters and then, in the upper right, you'll see a link for "advanced" and you can chose "items sold", along with lots of other things that you can narrow your search down to.

When you get to "completed listings" from the link, only the auctions that show up in green actually sold. You can see that, unless the auction is hyped, that there is very little premium for this coin over a regular one. The rest of the items listed as "completed" just had the auction end with no bids or offers. I can see by searching for 1881 canada 10 cent that the variety is quite common and you can easily see how it happened. The upper serifs on many of the letters (i's, n's, etc) had broken off the hub so the dies made by those hubs had no serifs and the letters needed to be repunched. The same thing can be seen on the I's in Victoria and Dei. I would highly recoomend that you now try to by any of them from "numismatic-Treasures" as he puts highly unreasonable prices on his coins, hoping that someone will bite(usually newbies).
