1 & 5 cents 1897

Post by Scrimshander » Sat Jun 24, 2017 12:50 am

I also have these two Canadian coins. I think the 1 cent coin has the die clash error on the reverse.

Please could you give me an idea of grades and also determine what variety the 5 cent is - wide 8/slender8

Thanks in advance

I'm not much of an authority on silver, but it looks like high XF to AU ... there is definite wear on the coin, but coins are hard to see on a computer screen. It looks like the bottom loop of the 8 is larger than the top one, so I'd say wide or large 8. The Cent looks UNC to me and I don't see a clash. The were some repunched 7's for that date. Look on the very bottom or under the horizontal/tip. I'd have to see the coin in hand to give you any idea of what UNC number that it is, but 60-62 brown.

Hi Bill,

Thanks again for your feedback. It's hard to see the die clash in the photo I took but it's the same as the example on this website just fainter. The line between the 9 and 7 is Queen Vic's chin. There is another line from the tip of the E that goes down to the T which is her forehead and nose and then another between the C and E which is the back of her head.

Very nice coins, the penny is a gem.

Bill is correct, the 8 on the 5 cent is a large loop. The best way to see the large loop is to download the picture to you computer and open it with Windows Photo Viewer or some other photo program.

For those not familiar with downloading a picture, simply right click the picture on your mouse and go to "Save picture as" and direct the picture to a specific folder. I made a folder called "CoinsandCanada pics".

Once there you can double click it to open and the use the "Changes the display sizes" magnifying glass to enlarge the picture to see the details better.

I am very, very new to grading coins but am learning with the help of this book "Guide for Grading Coins of Canada - André Langlois" and from my coin club members.

I am also a hard and cautious grader.

I would grade the 1897 - 5 cent piece at between VF30 - EF40. I do this based on part of the wear around the eye lash and hair around the ear. The other thing I applied that others may not is the amount of pitting on the coin which definitely reduces the luster.

All this being said I really appreciate the expert input from Bill and a few other regular contributors. I learn from each of you.

As for the die clash, I agree with Bill, that it is lacking. There might be a small partial on this penny but not the full one. The full one starts at top part of the E in one, then down through the T of cent, then curving back to the 7 and the possibly a minor part between the 9 and 7.

Just my thoughts and I look forward to others.

Thanks for your input Bushman, I was thinking that the slight wear around the eyelid and ear and the amount of marking on the surface of the 5 cent would lower it's grade.

I agree the die clash is very faint and only partially there on the 1 cent.
