I would spend now.
The problem with holding on to them is that the rate
of inflation will probably surpass whatever premium
there would be so you would technically be losing money.

Totally agree.... the biggest issue with larger notes is that you can lose a lot of money and have a lot of money tied up....

Most $1000 notes go for $1300 - $1500 at auction.... Given that the last $1000 note was issued in the 80's if the money had been invested with a rate of return of 5% per year from '88 to 2018 ... my quick estimates say you would have a ball park of 4K.....

I think if you are going to collect common notes there has to be something "exceptional" about the notes.. like there's an error, something significant with the serial number or perhaps all the prefixes...

Yes, you can lose money in the future (you need to wait a lot to have a reasonable price for this banknote).
