Storing Banknotes

Post by rkp21 » Wed Feb 28, 2024 3:57 am

I have a few third party graded banknotes and raw notes and would like to know if it’s fine to store the graded banknotes in Safety Deposit Box of Bank ? I have also kept a few silica pouches along with it.

Kindly let me know if I am doing anything wrong and how to store the graded banknotes properly as I don’t want to keep them in my house.

Thanks and Regards,

Storing graded notes will be fine in a Safety Deposit box. Being that the notes are sealed / airtight in the protective sleeve, you are good to go. I have my graded notes in a locked safe, and have for years. Only if storing the raw notes in the same box, then yes I would add silica gel packs & change them every so often...
Happy collecting

I would keep the silica pouches with your "raw" (or ungraded) collection. Also, remember to buy decent PVC-free (Mylar) or museum safe currency sleeves for your ungraded notes. There are many cheap plastic currency sleeves out there that are not appropriate for long term storage. Remember to store your collection in a dry place. No amount of silica pouches (or other types of desiccant) can keep your collection dry if you store in super humid conditions. I would avoid the basement (or areas where there may be large temperature fluctuations).

I was at a workshop on the storage/proper care of coin/banknote collections at the RCNA a few years ago. What was really surprising was that just about all the participants had experienced some damage to their collections & had stored their collections in their basements (or other problem spots). What I meant was "unfinished" basements. If your basement is finished, temp & humidity regulated, then there should be no issue.

Besides my humble feedback, I agree with Nota_phil on most points. He is definitely the go to person on this website for banknote history, info and advice. Always very knowledgeable and passionate about banknotes.
