1891 - 5 Cent Question

Post by akmusica » Sun Jun 14, 2009 2:42 am

Hello, I've recently reexamined my grandfathers coin collection I inherited a few years back.

Upon looking at this 1891 Canadian 5 cent, I realized the obverse and reverse are upside-down (180 degreess turned) from each other as seen below:

I haven't been able to find any information on the matter. Is this normal or uncommon?

Lastly, I know the picture quality is poor, but can anyone tell which obverse it is? (Or provide a link which depicts the versions?)

Much much thanks.

That is normal, from 1858 to 1907 the die axis was ↑↓, and from 1907 to date the die axis is ↑↑.

I agree. The terminology is as shown, it is like we use in the US, and the "up-up" orientation, we refer to as "Medal orientation.

Looks to be obverse 2, VF, maybe VF-30.
