The men's hockey gold medal at Salt Lake City in 2002 was voted by fans as the No. 1 Canadian Olympic Winter Games Moment of all time, out of 10 moments, in an online contest hosted in 2009 by the Mint and Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium. The top 3 moments are featured on 25-cent coins. Coming in at No. 2 was the Canadian women's hockey gold medal at Salt Lake City 2002, followed by Cindy Klassen at No. 3 and her five long track speed skating medals at Turin 2006.
3 millions of each coloured 25-cent coins, designed by Burlington, Ontario artist Jason Bouwman, were produced using patented technology at the Mint's Winnipeg facility and feature the maple leaf in brilliant red colour. These coins in colour were inserted randomly into circulation coin rolls and available exclusively at RBC branches and participating Petro-Canada locations. Petro-Canada locations also sold sport cards, containing a painted version of the coin for $7.95.
Men's hockey
In September 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint invited Canadians to save the latest circulation coin in its Vancouver 2010 collection - the 25-cent coin celebrating the men's hockey gold at Salt Lake City in 2002.
The launch of the coin was commemorated today at a special event for local hockey youth with special guests including NHL hockey star and member of the 2002 men's Olympic hockey team Michael Peca, Ottawa 67's head coach Chris Byrne and members of the Ottawa 67's hockey team.
Many Canadians from coast to coast remember where they were on February 24, 2002 when the final seconds of the game counted down to the exhilaration of Canada's first Olympic gold medal in men's hockey in 50 years.
We can each relive the thrill of that magical day by saving this special 25-cent coin while looking forward to new memories which will be made at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Women's hockey
On November 17, 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint invited Canadians to save the latest circulation coin in its Vancouver 2010 collection - the 25-cent coin celebrating the women's hockey gold at Salt Lake City in 2002. The launch of the coin was commemorated at a special event for local hockey youth with special guests including member of the 2002 women's Olympic hockey team, Danielle Goyette and members of the Montreal Juniors Hockey Club.
Canada's women's hockey team demonstrated the true meaning of spirit and determination when they won the gold medal on February 21, 2002 , which triggered celebrations from coast to coast to coast.
Employees of the Mint are extremely proud to have produced a coin commemorating this extraordinary moment in Canadian Winter Olympic Games history.

Cindy Klassen
In January 2010, the Royal Canadian Mint invited Canadians to save the latest circulation coin in its Vancouver 2010 collection - the 25-cent coin celebrating Cindy Klassen's unprecedented five medals at the Turin Games in 2006. She won the gold medal in the 1500 meter race, silver medals in the 1000 meter race and in the team pursuit, as well as bronze medals in the 5000 meter and 3000 meter races. This accomplishment led IOC president Jacques Rogge to name Klassen the woman of the Games.
I recall the 2006 Winter Olympic Games for the pride Canadians felt as they watched Cindy Klassen sweep around the Torino Oval Lingotto and grace the podium on five separate occasions.
Employees of the Mint could not be more proud than to have produced this coin in Winnipeg , featuring hometown speed skating hero Cindy Klassen and we wish her the very best as she competes at the Vancouver 2010 Games next month.

In addition to the moments coins, there were releases of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games themed circulation coins including several 25 cents and the 2010 Lucky Loonie coin.
