After the Province of Canada was formed in 1841 through the union of the colonies of Lower Canada and Upper Canada, the new government decided to mint coins for the new Province because coins were scarce. In medal alignment (↑↑), the tops of the obverse and reverse share the same position.
On most 1858 1-cent coins, vine at leaf #13 and sometimes at leaf #7 are broken. Furthermore, many broken leaf stems can be found. Here's the leaves numbering system for Canadian large cents.
