why coins?
A friend asked me why I was interested in coins recently. I was sort of pleased with my answer: 1. I find them beautiful.... 2. It's interesting to hunt for rarities 3. They have a way of making time tangible. I have a little bolus of highish grade pennies that run through the Boer war and that's ab...

Re: cleaned/not cleaned
Sorry - just saw this. I don't have a specific example in mind but I spoke with a very experienced guy I know at Torex and he explained that the sheen rotation is called a 'cartwheel effect' and it is in fact, a legit way to assess the surface of a coin.

Re: Has ICCS been doing a good job for Canadian coins?
Interesting question. I've just started collecting fairly recently (restarted actually - used to do so when I was a kid as well). I have just sent a batch of around 15 coins to be graded at ICCS, partly to find out if my own estimates of grade (and cleaning and other abuse) are any good. To me this ...

Re: What really matters?
I think the first thing you have to deside is if you want to make money at collecting or just collect. If you want to have a collection that is worth more in 10 years then it is now I think you better be looking at high grade coins , certified or not. If your like me , I just buy what I can afford ...

Re: What really matters?
  Love it! I'm probably a mix between amateur and party-goers + a bit of all of the others. :Étudiant: Province of Canada 1841 - 1867. You mean colonial tokens? Yes - some of those but also the 1858/9 coins - I'm kind of obsessed with them. They're nice to look at and the numerous errors ...

What really matters?
I've returned to collecting over the last two years - I'm focused on Newfoundland 1865 - 1890 and the Province of Canada 1841 - 1867. I am having a terrific time! The question is: what are the best coins to buy? Key dates? High grade? Complete sets? Varieties? Answer #1 (the amateur): "I buy things ...

cleaned/not cleaned
Hello all, This is a rookie question likely but I'll ask anyway. I am gathering tricks/advice for telling whether a silver coin has been cleaned or not. You know how when you tilt a coin from side to side there's a sort of shimmer effect that appears to rotate around the coin edge? It seems to me th...
