Re: 2024 10 cent
It looks like someone sneezed or drooled at first glace. Is it raised or just discolored? Was it direct from the mint or circulated?

Re: 1890-H Flying I?
I may have spoken too early on the variety of your 1890. I remembered that Rob Turner wrote a GREAT study on the 1890 & 92's and decided to look. However, your photo is not clear enough to see the other letters that may be involved and what's clear on the 'top" of the D in Dei. Some of the varieties...

Re: 1890-H Flying I?
"The 1890 was the first to use the Obv 3 bust type, but the Mint retained the use of the legend from 1876 to 1888, which has the small cross-bar E's. However, the top of the I in Dei has been recut several ways and the left foot of the A is often missing." Those line are from Griffin and his descrip...

Re: 1963 Doubling and Chip
I agree, mechanical/machine doubling. You can clearly see the offset caused by the die being loose in the holder and then moving slightly as the die comes up off the planchet. The die will stamp coins with that much offset or more, as it gets looser and looser and able to move a little more. Once th...

Re: 1859 Canada large cent.
It's just an 1859 DP2 (repunched # 2).... why they put a "D" in the name, I have no idea. You'll see the underpunch outside left of the upper loop and a large chunk left at 8:00 off the knob. They were made early in the mintage year so the vine at leaf 7 is almost all there.

No, the last coin has the "0" in a larger font.

Re: Fake or authentic?
I would say a local coin store. If it is silver, then it's worth about $20, with a TPG being 2X or 3X times what it is probably worth. Do some google searches and look at the bridge of the nose, the physical lettering and the surface or field of the coin. Don't send it in.

Re: 1940 Newfoundland 5 Cent Double 0 Variety
I see no doubled "0". But what I DO see is near "0" and a far "0", with the far "0" with a die chip in/on the "0".

Re: Fake or authentic?
Since some of those coins have sold for over $100k at large auctions, I would be very wary of the authenticity. I couldn't find any place to ID the specifics and the photo blurry. And there are dozens of them on Ebay from China from $15 to $250. Buying something from China for a "steal" nowadays rea...

Re: Historical Coin Value for Capital Gains Calculation?
When my wife cashed in some inherited gold bullion from her aunt 2 years ago, there was no mention of capitol gains, and was never brought up by the dealer. Likewise there was some silver sold then at scrap silver prices ... no problem.

Re: 1891 Large cent
It's much easier to look at the vertical cross on the "E's" to tell a 3 from a 2 or 4, regardless how worn the coin is.

Re: 1981 PMD or struck through?
I think that it's post-mint damage (gouged) and the copper alloy of the coin is oxidizing or chemically changing. They made 1.2 BILLION of the '81's so it's still worth 1 cent.

Re: 1891 Large cent
The long slash on the E is good for the '91's, but '92 is a problem, because you had Obv 4's then. The Obv 4 will have the short slash like the Obv 2, but the chin/throat are rounded like an Obv 1. An Obv 2 has the split/creased chin/throat. The SD/SL refers to the "leaves" not the letters. If you h...
