How are serial numbers put on bills?

I was reading a prior post here about serial numbers and didn’t want to pollute that thread with my question.

How are serial numbers applied onto bills? Are they stamped on, thereby leaving an indentation? Or are they applied in a way that leaves no impression?

Re: Value or any comments what this might be?

I meant more like someone spilled ink onto the bill from something, not actually writing on it with a pen, at least that’s what it looks like to me. It is just my uneducated opinion, my interest lies mainly with coinage. There are others here that know paper money very well though, hopefully they ca...

If it’s lowered, then something came between the planchet and die. When the coin is struck, the item is struck through, impressing itself into the coin.

If it’s raised, then something on the die cracked or chipped off. When the coin is struck, the metal is forced up into these voids.

Could also be a stuck through. Is the spot raised (relief) or lowered (incused)?

Re: 2005 D???

It’s possible that it could be a partially filled die, but because of the overall damage to the coin, I agree with coinguy, PMD.

If it’s on both sides of the bill, I would think ink from a pen.

Re: 1996 1 Cent Off Center?

Whenever I look at a coin or bill that someone thinks is an error, I ask myself, could I make this damage myself? In this case, I don’t think I could without damaging the beading. So I agree with SPP, he is one of the experts here and you can trust his opinion fully.

Re: 1999 November Quarter Error?

Pretty neat coin. This can happen when the die is wearing out, the devices start flaring as the edges are worn down. Not an error though.

Re: error?

It is called a strike through. Happens when something comes between the die and planchet at striking, in this case it’s grease.
