Reverse and Obverse

I *think* it's an obverse #2 though I may be mistaken. I have one of both and, even though I've been staring at them for some time now, I still struggle to tell them apart. Key details include the eye (which is deeper set in obv #2) and the mouth (which is a little more frown-y in obv #2). I'm told the insertion of the uppermost of the laurel leaves in between the E and the I of DEI is a red herring. [I believe it's cited in Charlton].

But take that with a grain of salt - it's a super-hard distinction to make.

You may be right - as I say, I find this to be a particularly difficult distinction. One person who could tell you in one second is Hugh Powell. He's the top expert in Newfoundland coins, certainly in Canada, possibly in the world. I have been dealing with him for a while as a client and have found him to be very generous with advice.
