1925 "Curved 5" Canadian nickel

Post by dafoeman » Thu Apr 02, 2020 9:46 am

I have ten 1925 Canadian nickels. One of them has a "5" that has a curved shape on the top part of it that none of the others have, and unlike any 1925's I've seen online. I took a picture of one of my regular 25's and the curved one. There are other differences as well, thicker lettering on "Five Cents", a thicker "1925", as well as a thinner rim.

Anybody seen this or heard of this particular variety? Thoughts?

To me, both of the horizontal tops of the 5's have a little curve up on the end .. but the one on the right is a much stronger strike. In your photo, the one on the right looks to be a more magnified image, since the diameter appears bigger. The straight lines that you drew show nothing to me, other than confusion. Draw both of your lines at the same angle to intersect the "D" at the same spot if extended. I think that the depth/completion of the strike on the right makes up most of the anomaly that you see.

Well I'll post the raw photos then, there is a difference for sure.

I have a number of them too and none of them look like that. To me it's almost as if them entire coin at some point was compressed? How does it compare in dimensions?

Just to add my two cents , take a look at the coin that is pictured in the price guide and values on this web site. Looks like it is a curved 5 to me. Is This suppose to be a variety ??

Exactly what part of the "5" are you talking about? Is it the horizontal top of the 5 or the diagonal part of the 5 that angles up to the tip? The coin that has pronounced scratches on it has been deformed by some post-mint damage... maybe that's what you are talking about?

Yes dafoeman, maybe we need a better idea of what your looking at , are you describing the large center 5 as in five cents or the 5 in the date 1925.

Yes well the curve is in the top part of the 5, I'll take some pics with a microscope and post them here, but I do believe it to be a variety. It also has other things like thicker lettering , not sure why. But I have other 25's and they dont have this and Ive seen dozens and dozens online and none have this.
