Copper Coin Grading Red/Brown

Post by DarkSki » Sun Nov 21, 2021 7:35 pm

I am a bit confused when it comes to grading and pricing copper coins as I often see graded coins such as as MS64 Brown however if a coin is really MS 62 or higher shouldnt they be red if they are truly Brilliantly Uncirculated ?

If MS 62 and higher can really be both then wouldnt there be 2 differrent designations for this

I always thought MS60 could be full brown , MS 62 could be Red/Brown and MS 64 and higher full red

Will i need to sell my red designated coins at this same cost point as the non lustrous coins ?

The MS number has nothing to do with R, RB or B. It is all about wear and surface marks. You can have a red 62, just like you can have a 65 RB

Hi Thanks for the response Bill ,

It is unfortunate that the red lustre doesn’t add any extra value, being they are both mintstate then there shouldnt be any wear on these coins anyway.

At least the red/brown and red large cents wont stay on the shelf as long.

Red and/or red luster will make a difference on PCGS coins, but not ICCS. Many MS coins will have bag marks/dings even though not circulated and in the 60+ the marks are what counts.
