What would cause this?

This is a coin that has had a question mark over it for years. Is this an error or just a damaged coin?

Heavily damaged coin.
No idea how the damage was done .
It's a spender.

Damaged well post-mint.

Thanks for the reply...What are the signposts that brings you to the conclusion "damaged coin" vs mint error?...I thought it may be the metal overhang (my numismatic terminology is non existent) that is on the rim that might indicate the latter but of course I haven't seen enough damaged coins outside of what I have in my own collection... I expect it is "how" the coin is damaged, which in my judgement or lack there-of is sometimes impossible to say..
In 1935 there may have been more machine shops than there are today. Now that I have found this site I will be studying the differences based on the experts conclusions. Thanks guys I have thick skin and rather know the truth about abnormalities as a learning tool...

The nearly horizontal deep cuts happened post mint. The design and lettering on the coin is the deepest recessed part of the working die, which strikes the coin from the force of the press. When you have mars/deep scratches on the coin lettering or design, it happened post mint, because a scratch on the die doesn't go down the recessed pattern hole. The holes/punctures on the coin came from a nail, a punch, a piece of machinery or something else that the coin got put into or the recipient of it. Your coin has led a tough life and evidently got his nose into something that he shouldn't have.

The “metal overhang” could be a cud.
