Wonderful hobby of World Paper Money

Post by Nota_phil » Thu Jun 30, 2022 12:50 pm

Hey there world paper money collectors!

Care to share what nations you like to collect?

I was nearly persuaded to get interested in world currency about 20 years ago by one of Canada's top error collectors. Unfortunately, I delayed taking up his advice until about 8 years ago when I started to track down some 2002 Duisenberg Euros. Four years ago, I picked up a copy of the 2nd last edition of the Standard Catalogue or World Paper Money (SCWPM) That's when the bug really set in & I haven't looked back.

Now I look out for pre-Euro, Commonwealth nations & lots of colonial stuff (especially African).

Anyone else go after these?

I mostly collect Canadian and am currently trying to collect the 1935 BoC series, But as i have stated in other threads I have a tendency to collect anything, I always try to collect a sample of currency from countries I have traveled to . Not what most collectors would keep . Most of my travel being in the Caribbean and Central America , my favorite is Costa Rica their modern notes are so attractive IMO.
I do enjoy seeing the Pictures of other counties Bank notes, Keep it up Nota-phil :D

The 5 Colones is one of my favourite designs from Costa Rica & I really want to get some of the earlier versions some day.

Hi Folks
Some very nice notes shown here. Yes, some of the Caribbean notes are quite beautiful. Got into World notes a few years ago. Like the older notes because I can appreciate the quality considering the limited printing technology back then. Here's a few notes you might appreciate...hope they load...
Cheers

-I agree with @GBELEC. Those are 3 beautiful notes @dbcoins! I love the train on the remainder from Costa Rica.

If you like trains (or other world MOTIFS) why not check out Notpahilyc Culture's WORLD MOTIFS PAGE:

I've listed many ways (& themes) collectors collect by on this page so check it out. In the meantime, here's a couple of HORSE notes I picked up recently (#1 is 50,000 Pesos from Mexico & #2 is 50,000 Lira from Italy):

Very nice notes indeed...Question. Doesn't that 50,000 PESO Mexico note equal about $3,000 Canadian dollars ?
Am I missing something ?
cheers

Doesn't that 50,000 PESO Mexico note equal about $3,000 Canadian dollars ?
-It might have been back in 1986, when it was issued, but then Mexico went through a period of hyperinflation & the peso dropped in value.
In 1992, the Mexican government reformed the peso so the new peso equalled 1000 of the old pesos. The note pictured P-93 went through several series & several prefixes. In the 1992 the "New Peso" reformed the design of P-93 (dropping the 3 zeros) & it was used for P-97 or 50 New Pesos). They did this with all the high hyper-inflated denominations. And then there was another currency crises & lack of faith in the peso so another New Pesos series emerged 2 years later. In 1995 this required US bailout in the tune of 50 Billion dollars. You can read about it here. The next series dropped the New from Pesos & announced another currency reform.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_peso_crisis
But I liked that note because it was the first before all the revisions & it also happens to be the first prefix. I did a quick look on eBay & discovered the note is quite scarce & won it for a fraction of the price the notes are being sold for on the bay.

It's what I love about it too! And it is such a relatively new hobby (compared to coins).

Collecting world currency isn't just about finding one's interest (motif, special #, replacements, etc): it is also about learning the history behind the notes (IMO) so its always very educational. Some folks just get obsessed with acquiring stuff. I like to keep involved with the forums, research & keep busy in other ways (so I'm not entirely focussed on buying).

Here's a 5 Pound (P-382a) from GB (1992) that I like b/c the Markers (denomination designation) are so tough to see. Can you see it? It is light blue on the top left. There is also the word FIVE in all caps but that's it. Not very user friendly & super inaccessible to those with visual impairments:

Last week I received this "Commonwealth of Australia" $20 (P-41a) & a few other notes from a seller in California. Its a pretty large note and the final hammer price was not expensive considering it is AU and over 50 years old.

You can check out the value of Australian banknotes from CoinsandCanada's sister site "CoinsandAustralia" here: https://www.coinsandaustralia.com/bankn ... ecimal.php

Last August, I submitted a bulk submission (50 notes) to PMG. I bought all of them described as UNC except 2 (one a BOC $1.00 replacement & a 5 Pound from Australia). I had suspicions about 3 solid radars I picked up from the Philippines but 2 were especially disappointing. In order to read more about my submission, please take a look at my weekly observations on my Collector's Corner page (I will be commenting & adding more in the coming weeks):
https://sites.google.com/view/notaphily ... -banknotes

The #1 note (100 Pesos) from the Philippines (2010) received an UNC64 EPQ. I like it b/c it was printed in France.
The ladder (20 Pesos) from the same country (2016G) received an UNC68 EPQ (one of 2 highest grades). It was nice to get b/c it is an uncommon single-letter prefix printed around the same time Duterte took power. The third note (50 Pesos) got an expected UNC 67 EPQ (I just knew this one was a super gem solid 5) & I wanted this one as it was a less common Duterte-Espenilla signature combo.
