Hi all
I have a 1744 Bologna Quattrino that is in very poor condition. It has somehow been struck in reverse. The letters are indented and not raised like a regular Quarttino. Has anyone seen a coin like this or have an idea how it was made. Is it a minting error or did someone make their own dies using a regular coin and counterfeit their own money. I have a few pics and on 2 I put a penny just so you can see that I haven't reversed the photos. I have included 2 photos of what the coin should look like. I can see someone using a real coin and stamping a blank piece of metal. He would probably badly damage the real coin but also have a usable fake coin, so doubling his money, lol.

Re: 1744 Quattrino struck in reverse
That is what is called a vise job or garage job.
Someone has taken three coins and squeezed them together.
No way that could happen during the minting process.

Thanks for your reply. Someone pressing their own coins is what I thought also. It is not a recent counterfeit so someone back in that time period was making his own spending cash.
