1859 1 cent Which variety is this? # 5 or 9/6
I am pondering if this is a DP N9 #5?
or is it a N9/6?
spent some time to figure it out and came to no conclusion.
can someone please help with this?
many thanks for your input.

Nice coin. It's a 9/6. There are 2 types (varieties) of the 9/6. I call yours the type 1. The type 2 is usually lacking anything inside the upper loop of the 9 and will not have the D/C at the first lobe of leaf 12. Both types will have the specific clean, precise break in the vine at leaf 2 and both show the underpunch between the tail and the upper loop of the 9 quite well .. slightly raised. The type 2 will have a nice 5/5 overpunch. Your type one has a very nice arc in the upper loop of the 9.
These are hard to find. Congrats.

Bill in Burl,
thank you for all this info.
Now I have to really look at what you said step by step. Maybe I have another within the lot I recently purchased. (several albums , with mostly QV coins out of an estate).I know there are some more varieties.
Very nice to find out that this coin is in fact not an every day coin.
Thank you.

The other marker for both types is that the C in Canada will have what I call "fire" in the top notch of the C. It is actually 3-4 slightly offset underpunches when the Obv working die was made. There are other reverses married to this Obv, but both of the 9/6's have the C that way.
